I bought a refurbed 500G last year for $200. I love it. It is my wireless router and back up for Time Machine.
Apple does command the higher price range but their stuff just works with my mac.
Nope. I had a 500gig one that died after about 15 months. I wouldn’t trust it again.
We’ve had ours for 3 years nearly. Tod says it’s totally worth it if it saves you even once. We also have apple tv where we watch all our movies now! Tod reads Mac rumors every day – total Mac junkie!
Although i am a huge apple fan, Absolutely Not! DO NOT BUY!
#1 the hard drives in there are Hitachi and i prefer either a Seagate, Western Digital, or G-Drives
#2 the airport extreme is less than half the price and has the flexibility to plug in ANY external hardrive. (depending on the attached drive, could be more cost effective)
so go ahead and plug in your 4T RAID and feel safe for your backups.
either setup is not going to be a good working drive (ie. manipulating files wireless). its not going to have the speed as a firewire, eSATA, or even USB would have.
the airport extreme is the best thing i have ever done for my home wireless setup. plug in a hard drive to it and its ready to go with the flexibility of expanding later with better hard drives.
My first one quit, on my second one. I have it set up as wireless in the house, but we also have another network.
It only backs up when I am logged on to that network. So I have to do it at night or when I am not on the computer;which isn’t very much.
I have the 2TB Time Machine and I also use it as my wireless router. I love it! backups up every 30 min.
I have one & thought it was pretty spendy until the time came when I needed to use it. It’s ease & flawless ability to store multiple backup points that are searchable was PRICELESS. After years of dealing with HP, I will NEVER, EVER go back to PC world, or non-apple interfaced backup/hardware again.
To that end, I have a Macbook Pro (that I didn’t buy a warranty on…oops) that I bought in 2009. I had a clients daughter spill piping hot coffee….yep…a full freshly brewed cup ALL OVER my keyboard of my MacBook Pro. My client immediately snatched up my laptop & turned it over as we watched the steaming hot coffee pour all over his countertops out of my keyboard. I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. Much to my surprise/shock/amazement….I never even had a small problem. It worked like nothing ever happened. Are you kidding me? What’s AMAZING!!!!
Even better, when you want tech support – the support staff sound like they are from Iowa they have such a lack of accent. Amazing after all the Middle Eastern countries I’ve struggled to understand over the years.
Worth. Every. Penny.
