Blogging’s a Picnic with Picnik

You know the saying, “Life’s A Picnic“, right? Well, I’m here to tell you that Blogging’s a picnic too when you have the right tools, such as this super-easy image editing tool.

One of the ways you can really make your blog posts “POP” and get some extra google seo juice running through it, is by adding some visuals. If you compare a non-image laced blog post with one that has a few strategically placed images, you’ll notice immediately how much more inviting the one that has the images is to read versus the one that doesn’t.  Does this bring us back to our picture-book days of preschool?  Maybe so.  But is it your goal to have your potential clients remain on your site and possibly even READ your blog posts?  Definitely so!

Picnik was introduced just a few short years ago and is now one of the most widely used online photo editing tools available.  There are of course both the free and paid versions, but for what you would be using it for, I would stick with the free one.

One of the tricks that Picnik is great for is bringing some dimension to your images within your blog posts.  Adding a simple shadow effect takes an image from drag to “Dang!” in an instant!

We just got a new kitten for Christmas so I have to use his pic for a demonstration!

Here’s a quick video on how this can be accomplished in about 90 seconds :

Another great use of Picnik is for watermarking your own images so that others do not use them.    When you pay big bucks for your images, you’d rather not have someone else take advantage of your expenses, right?

Here’s a quick video on how this is accomplished in just a few simple steps:

There are dozens of other image editing tools within Picnik that you can explore and use this coming year – it’s a wonderful option for those of us that don’t have Photoshop to use or other expensive alternatives.

Oh, and don’t forget to have fun!

Great post – my daughter has been using Picnik for almost a year… how often would you recommend using watermarks for Blog photos – I’m not sure why I’d want to take the time… Thank you

Hey Deb – Working with all kinds of Agents who have all kinds of different priorities has made me aware of a larger than you may think number who are territorial of their own images being swiped for someone else to use. I must admit that it does take a few extra minutes to add the watermarking, but if I have paid a substantial amount of money for images, I will do it. Different strokes for different folks!

Thanks for the tip! I’d forgotten about this app. Actually I like this idea for watermarking the MLS charts i post on my site & blog. Using a small version of my logo right on the chart (what i’m currently doing) is kind of loud. A watermark accomplishes the same goal but is more subtle.

Very helpful post, Suzanne, love the video how to. I am also a huge fan of istockphoto (when you can’t get a local photo of what is needed). Thanks for the share!

I love Picnik… it’s my favorite app for all my online images online. I use it so much I felt guilty and signed up for the $24.95 a year premium version and it’s well worth it.

I love the fact I can pull from and save to Picasa, Flickr, and more…

I’ve been using picnik for over a year (I know because I just re-upped my premium membership). It’s worth every penny. I even created all of the graphic buttons on my website using picnik.

Really good point about the watermark – in searching for local photos, I have found SO many that I could swipe, if I did that kind of thing. I don’t want any uninformed people swiping my photos.

Great tool for simple edits, watermarking, etc. If you want something more substantial/ custom editing/ photo montages, I’d go with something more professional like Photoshop or hire someone to create the images for you.

I am quite experienced with PhotoShop but I have to say Picnik is a blast. If I needed something done quickly Picnik is very handy – expecially if I am away from my office and need to work on some photos. Another great tool to have in my toolkit.

Johanna, as of right now, the free version of picnik dose not have video editing abilities and I don’t think the premium does either. As far as I know.
