Promote Yourself

The average “reach” for a Facebook business page tops off at about 16% of the page’s total fans.  Want to reach more?  It’s easy as long as you are willing to pay for it.  Enter promoted posts for Facebook pages.

Here is a quick video detailing how these posts work with some tips on how and when to use them.  This is going to be a valuable tool to drive traffic to your website, which was previously hard to do as Facebook wouldn’t freely share posts that took people outside of their site.

On one of our fan pages we have about on average 26% reach and I thought that was sad. I’m surprised that 16% is the average. I was wondering if your posts are hidden from users even if they choose “Recent Stories” instead of “Top Stories” in their news feed.

That’s great Marie!!! Yes, the posts are still hidden…FB is in control.

Thanks for the video. Do you know if you have to be the primary Admin user of your Facebook page to be able to use the promote option? I am not seeing the button.

  4. Steve Pacinelli says:

I think you may be right. I just tried to go onto a page where I am not an admin and I couldn’t do it either.

  5. When I go to my company facebook page, I do not have a post option. What step am I missing?

  6. Ross Hair says:

It makes me smile when FB says “Your post reached 18% of your Page’s fans”. What they are really saying is that if you pay us we will share your post with the 82% of fans who otherwise won’t see your post.

  7. Steve Pacinelli says:

You still won’t reach all 82% Ross! ;-)

  8. Tim says:

When I look at my business page, the option to promote doesn’t show up. Any ideas?

  9. Steve Pacinelli says:

I just found out its only for pages with over 400 fans.

  10. Frances says:

Damn. I was wondering why I wasn’t getting the promote option – I’m only at 170 fans. Thanks for looking up the info.

I have recently used this feature and at first was impressed with the activity. Within 48 hours, I became annoyed with the spam, as the majority of hit activity was from oversees, which is irrelevant in a small community in Maine. I will keep an eye on this, hoping to see improvements over time.
