Pros and Cons of the Top 5 Blogging Platforms for Real Estate

While some would say the real estate blog is dead, we think it is alive and kicking. Many Realtors just need some help choosing and understanding the different platform options available to them so we decided to compile a list of the pros and cons of the top 5 real estate blogging platforms. NOTE: The content that you put into your blog is WAY more important than the platform that you choose and really will be what determines the success of your time spent blogging.

That being said we know that it is always helpful to understand the options that are out there so that you make the right decision on a blogging platform that will work best for YOU!

Notes from our discussion on the Pros and Cons of the Top 5 Real Estate Blogging Platforms:

#1 Blogger

Pro’s – Free, Super simple, Powered by Google

Con’s – With no cost and simplicity comes lack of options, designs and the content is Blogger’s/Google’s not yours.

#2 Posterous

Pro’s – Free, May even be easier than Blogger, allows posting via email and mobile, Import directly from ActiveRain.

Con’s – Again it isn’t your content because it is a free service, it actually belongs to Posterous, lack of customization related to real estate search, idx, etc…

#3 ActiveRain

Pro’s – Largest real estate network for blogging, no better place to learn and engage from other like minded agents, great Google juice.

Con’s – Just like Facebook, ActiveRain owns the platform and can change their terms of service anytime.  Recently many grandfathered in Rainmakers had their accounts deactivated as an example and were not happy about it to say the least.


Pro’s – Free, Largest blogging platform in the world, great SEO, many theme and plug in options.

Con’s – Again, you do not own the content as it is being hosted on the WordPress servers.  Recently more than a million blogs went down and there is literally nothing that can be done about it on your end.


Pro’s – FINALLY, You own the content that you create.  1000’s of themes and plug ins that are free and many that are real estate specific.

Con’s – A bit too tech savvy for the average user, especially for the average Realtor.  Really need at least a basic understanding of HTML to maximize your site.  You do have to pay for your hosting which can be $5-$25 a month.

    Enjoyed the video, very informative. I, for one, prefer to shell out the money to have a WP blog so that I own the content. Seeing what happened to Jay Thompson over his AR account, it makes me glad to be making efforts on my own site as opposed to using AR.

    Great review on the blogging options – I got set up on, posted my first blog and then someone said “are you going to stay with that always or switch to Active Rain”. She kept talking about the google juice I’d get from Active Rain…. If I am consistent with the blogging on my site, I’ll be getting google juice anyway, right?

    I am a big advocate of and though you do have to learn a little HTML the pro’s of this far out way the con’s. There are so many forums that you can visit to get help with any coding issue you may have. RE Bloggin 4Life!

    I use a site for my main site now and the others listed above (plus a few beyond that) as additional blog sites with links back to my main site.

    This again was great content and as a result of this same discussion in a previous webinar, I decided to use, then I hired 210Consulting to do the customization of the site. It is now a matter of my writing my bogs and doing the other “SEO” activities to get this going. Now just learning about backlinking properly, providing good content and having good take aways….I would highly recommend every real estate agent who is interested in learning this to really be dedicated to takinga smany webinars as possible.

    You can integrate lots of widgets and FB, social networking tools. I even have footer on the bottom and 2 FB like/fan Widgets. I think the HOW and WHY to blog is more important than the WHERE.

    Blogging is great if you have something to say. If you don’t it’s just a public showcase to bore the public with marginal input. There are no do overs in social media or blogs.

    Before blogging, agents should consider whether they have the tools they need to make a good impression. Otherwise, they should preserve their constructed reputation and avoid blogging altogether.
