Real Estate Video Tours and The Iphone 4

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW!

HDhat‘s initial testing of the Iphone 4 has revealed that it is a great choice for a real estate video tour camera, however certain minor and simple modifications will be necessary.

1) The Iphone 4 will need a wide angle lens.

HDhat.com has tested a very inexpensinve .45x wide angle lens on the Iphone 4 with great success. We will publish the modification method here on TechSavvyAgent.com and our Blog soon.

2) The Iphone 4 will benefit greatly from a simple stabilizer system which will also be quite simple to accommodate.

Neither the wide angle modification or stabilizer will require the Iphone to be modified or touched in anyway.

3) There are also other benefits that derive from the addition of a wide angle lens to the Iphone 4 both in video capture and editing.

For instance the addition of a quality wide angle lens to the Iphone 4 produces a big difference in the contrast ratio, the saturation, white balance and stability. So be sure to watch for our upcoming post titled “How to modify your Iphone 4 with a wide angle lens – a simple, inexpensive modification to dramatically improve your Iphones video capture“.

Some important notes about the videos below.

*All the videos below have been “stabilized and smoothed” in the HDhat.com editing process. So the finished product you see here is much smoother than the raw footage from the cameras.

*We did not brighten or tweak the colors in any of the videos during the editing process.

*We did change camera settings on the higher end Sony HX-1 so that we were able to capture nice bright video.

*The Iphone 4, because of its lightweight and small size, was the most difficult to capture stable real estate video tours. A simple stabilizing system will eliminate this and allow for capture that will compare and rival many higher end video cameras.

Some conclusions:

*The Sony HX-1 which is the highest priced of the 3 captured the best and most stable footage.

*The Kodak Zi8 captured considerably darker footage and adjusted to changing light conditions slower than the Iphone and the HX-1

*The addition of a wide angle lens and a simple stabilizing system will allow the Iphone 4 to outperform the Kodak Zi8 and in some cases produce results comparable to much higher end cameras.

NOW LETS GET ON TO THE VIDEOS TO COMPARE………

Great post and work, Mark…until I see how the wide-angle works for the iPhone, I would stick with something wider – it was a really narrow band, but still gave a decent look at the home. Also, I tested it and it sucked a lot of memory right away so folks…get them downloaded and remove them from your memory!

    this is pretty exciting news!

I have used the i4 for video and it is awsome…probably much better than previous versions. I did a comparison with the Flip HD and they are nearly equal. I equipped the Flip with a 28mm wide angle and it rocks!

  4. The Iphone 4 without a wide angle lens is much like the Zi8 or Flip without a wide angle lens.
However, adding a wide angle lens to the Iphone 4 improves important things like white balance, saturation levels, contrast ratios and aids in post production stabilization.

The simplest way to think of it is that with a wide angle the Iphone 4’s camera is being sent more information so that the camera can make better choices for these important things I mentioned above.

However, this is all technical…..the most important thing about an Iphone 4 is that an agent can utilize a small simple to operate high def camera to shoot footage that can be used by a professional editor to produce a fantastic real estate video tour……capturing the footage really is the easy part as I will show.

In fact next week I will blog a “how to” video training that I gave to a new agent(Nichole) at her listing. After less than 3 minutes of training she went on to shoot footage that resulted in a tour every bit as good as a Pros.
Literally my total time in training her from the first time she touched the camera was less than 3 minutes! You will be amazed at her results.

The reason there are so many “bad” real estate video tours out there isn’t filming. Most bad real estate videos are a result of bad editing!

A critical component of professional editing is “stabilizing” the footage to deliver a final tour that is “smooth” with a flow that keeps the buyer interested.

The Iphone 4 certainly is capable of capturing the high quality footage and that is great news for the tech savvy agent.

  6. So what’s the modification to add a stabilizer to the iPhone?

Here is the article/video on adding a wide angle to the Iphone 4 and you can see the stabilizer bar there as well http://techsavvyagent.com/text/how-to-add-a-45x-wide-angle-lens-to-the-apple-iphone-4/ to order the stabilizer bar visit http://www.hdhat.com/store/video-tour-stabilizer-bar.html

  8. Not a iPhone user (I have a Blackberry BOLD) but I really like the look of the video done with the iPhone 4. It seems most of the shots we’re filmed while standing still. Any idea on how good it is when you are walking and filming at the same time?

What do you think?
