Top 3 Tips on how to get more fans on your Facebook Fan Page

Here’s another one of those “if you’re asked a question more than 3 times, write a blog about it,” scenarios!  Well, yesterday I got asked this question a half a dozen times (yep, in one day!) and three the day before, so it must be a hot topic that is making its rounds around the real estate communities, right?

Alright, so we’ve figured out what the difference is between your profile and your fan page, and that you access your fan page by going through your profile.   We’ve added some customizations to it, like a picture (other than yourself!) and some killer apps to make your page user friendly.  We’ve sent out our initial “Suggest to Friends” invitation for our sphere on our Facebook profile to also like our new Fan Page.  Then we sit back and wait.  And wait.  And… wait.

Then after a day or two we wonder, “Why don’t I have hundreds of fans yet?”  I mean, if there are 500 million people on Facebook, surely more than 21 people can find my new fan page and click that like button!

Well, just like anything online, if you don’t market it they won’t find it.  So here’s our Top 3 tips on how to get more fans (or likes) on your Facebook Fan Page:

Spread the word1.   Influence the Influential
Think about who you know in your sphere or industry that have some major pull and/or a larger sphere than you do.  Send a note asking them to invite their friends (and fans) to become a fan of yours too – you could even make it into a competition with the one who brings the most new fans to the table wins a gift certificate… Everyone knows someone influential – especially in this business – so make good use of it!

2.  Take Full Advantage
…of what you’ve already got.   Don’t forget that a large percentage of your contacts in your contact management system may not be a friend of yours on Facebook.   Set up an email campaign with deliberate calls to action toward your new fan page – just make sure you have some kind of relavent content on there for them to see before doing this!

Add a link to your Fan Page in your email signature(s) – if you’re like me, you probably have more than two!  Add it to your offline marketing pieces (maybe a QR Code directing people to your Fan Page?)… wherever you are advertising your website, add your Fan Page url too.

Keep it fresh3.  Keep It Fresh
There’s nothing that will stunt your fan page growth than a stale wall.  Keep adding fresh, relevant, hyper-local information that people want to know about – NOT just real estate by the way – and also not just by using an app like NetworkedBlogs to pull your new blog posts in.  Physically log in to your Facebook account and make an update manually a couple of times a day and watch your page grow.  NetworkedBlogs won’t make relationships for you – only you will!

Of course, there are many others ways to get your Fan Page growing, but these will definitely make a significant impact on your numbers and eyeballs seeing your information – and certainly get you to the point of taking advantage of creating your custom facebook url (after you hit 25 fans).   Let us know of some of the unique ways that you have increased your fan page like numbers too!

    I have had good success with using very targeted FB ads to get new fans. I wrote a post about my experience for Matt McGee’s Hyperlocal Blogger site.


    I stopped running ads months ago, but FB just gave me some free ads, so I’m up and running again.

    Sometimes we go to future Inman winner blogs and back-link to our fan page 😉 … and guess where we learned to back-link.

    Great post! Especially like the part of keeping it “Fresh”. Just takes a little extra work….maybe even a creative thought or two. I constantly check out the community fan pages from different towns all over the US to pick up new ideas.

    Be careful in links in emails; I’ve found in my studies of goodlife team email deliverability that link count in email can directly influence spam scoring. Emails with 2-3 links in the footer (my website, facebook page, etc) can easily bump you from a low spam score to above the threshold.

    Just an FYI lest people think they should litter their emails with links!

    Great tip about the links-also isn’t it a heck of alot of clutter.
    What I try to do with my page is actually take the time to select things I think that are of interest. I don’t feel there’s any value per se to just pulling in an automated feed to populate the page.That’s no different than the RSS feeds I read daily,and to be honest,I wouldn’t want to like a page that was all automated postings. (Same with twitter etc )

    I’ve been working on this for a while now. I hate that you can’t change the fan page name. I think naming it something people would search for is helpful. I named my fan page “” after my website… I should have named it Ohio Real Estate, etc.

    I’m also running targeted ads on FB and occasionally reminding my “friends” to become a fan. Lately, emails for liking pages are becoming annoying and spammy though.

    I think if more agents worked together to become a fan of each other’s pages we could build numbers for each other and add a more reputable amount for the stranger’s eye. (Everyone wants to “like” a page that tons of other people have already…) It’s like a testimonial. There are a million+ agents, surely we can work together in volume.

    Plus I always learn something from other agent’s pages. It gives something to “share” on your wall when you have nothing new to post. As long as they’re not in your local competition area, why not?

    If anyone wants me to like their page, message me/add me to FB, I’d be happy to help and get the ball rolling…

    You are right, it just like anything else: you have to market it. Put it on everything you have, business cards, email signatures etc. If you want to people to know about it tell them.

    best marketing is to be relevant and interesting. What I learned in the last week and a half? People are interested in fires, especially suspicious ones.

    Question, If I hold a contest as mentioned above:

    How do I keep track of which friend brought the most fans??? Is there away to tell who came because of what friend?

    I would love to know so I can hold a contest on my facebook business page.

    I think your point about adding “hyper local” content is a good one. This is value-added content since it saves your (potential) fans the time of finding it themselves.
