Small Huge Change To YouTube
I bet you didn’t even notice. YouTube has made a change that while on the surface is pretty minimal, actually is a huge deal.
In the past when someone watching a YouTube video on your site double clicked on the video it would launch a new window or tab with the video playing on YouTube.
There are a number of reasons that people double click even though it is unnecessary. One is that many people simply double clicked just to start the video. Another is that many people also double click in an attempt to watch the video in full screen mode. It was actually a bit un fair of YouTube to have this functionality because while it did drive tremendous amounts of unintentional traffic to their site it really hurt the sites where the videos were embedded.
So what’s new? Now when someone on your site double clicks on a video it simply maximizes the video to full screen mode! Probably the way it should have always been. I want to applaud YouTube for making this small yet huge change as it really does benefit the little guys like us.
Below are examples of the old functionality and the new functionality, which ironically changed between episode #1 and episode #2 of The Queue. Try double clicking on each to see the difference. When you add videos from YouTube from this point forward there is nothing special that you have to do it just happens automatically! Did you just find this out from me? Let me know in the comments below.

yea this change pissed me off. i am a big youtube fanatic and when i see a video i like i always doubleclick to go to their youtube page to subscribe. now that functionality is gone. I know, always one in every group
This is great information, thanks Chris. Didn’t realize it, but I tried it on both videos and I see what you mean. This will definitely help the smaller guys out there.
There is still a button for that Dean. You can press the YouTube button!
I clicked on the new view, and on the iPad, still small. Didn’t go to full screen.

I think this is great as the viewers will stay on YOUR site! Thank you Chris for keeping us informed!
Had not noticed that. Mucho thanks to YouTube and TSA for pointing this out!
So cool, finally! “heard” it from you first! of course!
Nothing worse than driving someone away from your page especially after you work so hard to provide relevant content. Well, actually there are worse things (like Apple
) but at least YouTube made a good move.
Very cool change for the better. Thanks for the heads-up!
Heard it from you first, of course! This is just one more reason I cannot wait until our new site is launched! Thank you, Chris for all you do for us!
Heard it first from you!
Great advice on Next v’s Now. Regarding Qwiki, will they follow youtube’s lead and allow viewers of video embeded on a 3rd party site stay there rather than get taken away from the site when another Qwiki is clicked on?
Thanks Chris,
YouTube is very underutilized but thankyou for the prompt info.
I appreciate you being onto of all things Tech Savvy.
That’s a great trick … thanks TSA! I have a lot of videos to update now.
Dean, if you don’t like the new way, there’s still an option to embed the “old code” for those that want it to navigate to their YouTube channel when you click on the “embed” button.
Hi Chris, Yes, I did just get this YouTube info from you. Had a presentation at our Assn. of REALTORS

Yes, I did just get the info from you re: YouTube change and double clicking. Good job!
I have a tiny suggestion for you in return:) You might try positioning your video cam away from the window and mirrored doors. Just a thought! Love The Queue.

Great chanege as my business is driven by Video.
Did YouTube go back to the old format recently?? I just created and uploaded 9 new videos, embedded a player on my site, and all the videos are formatted the old way (opening a youtube page). Any advice?
I noticed this… Youtube also allows you to record longer than 10 minutes now. Great Blog
YouTube is really making some changes that are great for us real estate agents. I expect big things in the next few years!
