What Video Camera Should I Buy For Real Estate Home Tours?

We know that there are STILL not very many agents implementing home tours in their business for a variety of reasons. I wanted to create a post for the agents who still haven’t got their feet wet with video and need some guidance on hardware. Of course Tech Savvy Agent recommends hiring a pro photographer and videographer, but we want to be realistic and provide other options to try and improve everyone’s marketing, not just a few. In this video, I interview Mark Passerby founder of www.hdhat.com because I couldn’t think of a better person to ask.  Mark was a Re/Max agent for years before he started HDHat and has edited over 10,000 videos.  I don’t know of anyone that has seen more footage from a variety of cameras.  Listen as Mark actually does not recommend some of the more popular devices out there.

Yeah and BTW, Mark’s videos that he edits from average agents look better than some of the pro stuff I have seen.

I think video has a wow factor. But poorly done videos can do more harm than good.

Hiring a videographer and then editing can cost significantly more than 25-30 good quality stills.

The added cost does not increase the value proportionately

well since I took earlier advice, I do have the Kodak Zi8. Guess I will have to see if anyone in this small town does videos, or buy a new camera….shucks.

There is a ‘how to’ in the tutorial section on how to add a nice .5x wide angle lens to your zi8 which will double the capture area an just be sure set on the 720 setting for the widest capture. HDhat.com for tutorial. We have an agent that does great tours with a 1st generation Flip ie she moves a little slower in the home and makes sure home is as bright as possible an her vids look great…her website is //www.debontheweb.com she films we edit. The new cameras like the wx9 just shoot wider, brighter, and more stable but if you have a zi8 then just add a lens an it can work.

I cannot make out exactly what camera model he is saying when he talks about the Sony. W? 9. What is the word between w and 9? Thanks and what size lenses does he have?

Awesome tips Steve and Mark! Imagine the agent who sets this WX9 set-up on the table next to her/his iPad at a listing presentation. Do you think the listing client will be impressed? Yes!

I’m trying to find a new camera with an external mic. I had the Vado, but it didn’t hold up very well and has broken. I’m hearing good things about the Kodak ZI8, but this video says it isn’t very good in terms of quality. I absolutely love the HD flip cam, but it doesn’t have an external mic. Any suggestions?

Don’t tell people about the home, the real estate, show them with video. Video takes the viewer, listener to the property, delivers world wide. Have had luck with several Sony cameras. Editing is a must. Great post.

I agree with Andrew. A proper video tour creates and emotional connection with the viewer (love or hate it) and the sellers love when an agent does something extra/different than what 95% of all the other agents are doing.

Sadly with the MLS autogenerating “videos” from the slideshow and putting them on YouTube, viewers have to weed through the true tours from the virtual ones.

One last thing, while the video tour can help sell a house (especially to out of state buyers) the biggest strength lies in getting the agent new listings! People want the agent to “earn” their commission and this in one tool to help them do so.
